Large Bowl - Shino

Dark stoneware bowl with a soft, rounded lip. Layered shino glaze creates a range of surface variations from metallic orange peel texture to glossy opaque white clouds. This very old family of glaze recipes has always been a favorite of mine. Shino wares contain a small amount of soil, representing a sense of place.

The finish is food safe. Though, I would probably only use it for dry goods, to preserve the integrity of the textured surface. If cared for, handmade ceramic works can last multiple lifetimes and become heirlooms.

I sell fewer large works because I give away most. These are some of my favorite pieces to make; they show a fuller expression of materials, hand work and firing as those factors relate to form. Glazes that communicate a gestural quality permanently reflect the intuitive decision-making that happens in an instant, during one of the final steps in the process.

Larger works can be made in the same variety of finishes as smaller pieces.
